PM Narendra Modi received a phone call from US President Donald Trump on the eve of his 75th birthday. Modi thanked Trump for his warm wishes and said both countries are committed to taking India-US relations to greater heights. He also expressed support for Trump’s efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
The call came at a time when India and the US have resumed formal trade talks after weeks of delay. Officials from both sides met in New Delhi on September 16 and described the discussions as “positive and forward-looking.” They agreed to speed up efforts for an early trade deal.
The talks are significant because relations hit a rough patch last month when Trump imposed higher tariffs on Indian imports, doubling them to 50 percent. This led to a sharp drop in India’s exports to the US and also delayed planned trade meetings.
Now, with discussions back on track, both governments are looking to rebuild momentum. Leaders on both sides see the India-US partnership as a comprehensive one, with trade being a key pillar of cooperation.
