One of the principal complaints against the previous YS Jagan regime in Andhra Pradesh was the endless supply of Ganja (marijuana). Lack of policing measures and indirect support of local leaders meant that Andhra Pradesh had virtually unstoppable Ganja supply during the YCP time.

However, the new NDA government has taken strong stand against Ganja cultivation and deputy chief minister and also the forestry minister, Pawan Kalyan has taken significant steps in this regard.

The Manyam district in the rural pockets Andhra Pradesh is where the Ganja cultivation primarily happened during the YCP regime. It was estimated that around 11,000 acres were used to farm Ganja back then.

With the onset of the NDA government, strong measures were taken against Ganja cultivation as Eagle teams and special policing operations were carried out to destroy the cultivation and produce. As many as 375 villages, which were primarily indulging in Ganja cultivation, where absolutely bombarded by the authorities.

Generally, this illegal cultivation starts in July or August and the produce is cultivated in December or January. But thanks to the proactive measures of the new government and strong policing measures, almost entire produce was wiped out last July and August. Same trend was seen again this year as authorities started to destroy and eliminate Ganja seedlings and plantations already.

Subsequently, the rural pockets which were regarded as Ganja hotspots in the past, have all been qualified, and the production has nearly been wiped out.

This is primarily due to the proactive measures of Kalyan, who had been repeatedly addressing this topic. This will certainly go down as one of the most emphatic victories of Kalyan as the deputy chief minister.

Thanks to the continuous coordination and monitoring of the deputy chief minister with police department and authorities, Andhra Pradesh is nearly free from Ganja cultivation now. Instead, Kalyan has promised to sort out other employment opportunities for the youth in this area. This is going to be another crucial step in bringing the youth away from Ganja cultivation to more social practices.
