Despite not being too active in Telangana, it needs to be said that Telugu Desam party is still one of the fundamentally strong political forces in the state. The kind of foundational strength that TDP has here is surprisingly good. The fact that the yellow brigade won 19 MLA seats even amidst tough fight in Telangana’s first ever election in 2014 proved the same.
However, Telugu Desam did not contest the 2023 Telangana election, and this was primarily due to the unrelenting political assault of YS Jagan on Chandrababu in AP.
But now that Telugu Desam is back in power in Andhra Pradesh, and Chandrababu took charge as the chief minister, things are starting to look positive again for the party in Telangana. In fact, Chandrababu has confirmed that Telugu Desam will certainly contest in the upcoming Telangana election.
“Telugu Desam party was born on Telangana soil. Our party initiated from the MLA quarters in Hyderabad. Telugu Desam stand by the Telugu community, no matter where they are. I can affirmatively confirm that Telugu Desam will be contesting the upcoming Telangana election.” Babu confirmed in a recent podcast.
But there are a couple of key pointers to be noted here. Firstly, Telugu Desam needs a strong president in Telangana, who can drive the political narrative and hold the party firmly. And then there is the alliance prospect, considering that BJP and Janasena are in alliance with TDP in Andhra Pradesh. Will this NDA alliance continue in Telangana as well? Or will TDP go solo?
Going by Chandrababu’s confirmation, it needs to be understood that Telugu Desam is likely to set focus on Telangana politics next term. This is going to seriously change the game as it appears that Telangana could be bracing for a multi-party political war.
