It is already known that the government of Andhra Pradesh discarded the ration supply vehicles program that was initiated by the previous Jagan regime which turned out to be a flop project. While Jagan tried to distribute ration supplies directly at doorstep through designated vehicles, this wasn’t feasible and it was quickly put to shed. So the new government discarded it permanently.
However, there was this one particular issue that is associated with the discard, and that is the livelihood of the vehicle drivers who took up the gig.
The previous government had procured nearly 10,000 vehicles for this gig and all of them are turning out to be dead investments. So there is extreme financial and employment pressure on the drivers of these vehicles.
On that note, the latest developments are suggesting that one such ration vehicle drivers who took in Guntur sustained a heart attack, unable to bear the news about the discontinuation of the program. Adding to that, these drivers had been protesting the decision.
However, the fundamental point that must be noted here is that civil supplies minister Nadendla Manohar had already made it clear that these vehicles will be registered on the names of the drivers. This is a thoughtful gesture to maintain the livelihood of the drivers and keep things going.
But despite this considerate decision from the government, a few untoward incidents are happening. One simply has to wonder what else the government must do to secure these individuals.
