Pakistan, which openly backed the recent Pahalgam terror attack, is now facing the consequences. In response to the attack, India launched a strong counter-operation and simultaneously tightened pressure on Pakistan on multiple fronts. One such move includes India’s strategic decision to block water flow under the longstanding Indus Water Treaty.
Now, with parts of Pakistan’s Sindh region turning bone-dry due to severe water scarcity, Islamabad has softened its stance. On Wednesday evening, Pakistan sent a formal letter to India, pleading for a reconsideration of its decision on the Indus River water agreement. The letter mentions that the Sindh region is turning into a desert and urges India to show mercy by resuming water supply.
In fact, India had already withdrawn from the Indus Water Treaty even before the launch of “Operation Sindoor,” a direct retaliation to the Pahalgam terror strike. With the treaty now void and the barrages on the Indian side completely shut, not a drop of water has been flowing into Pakistan.
The sudden stop in water flow has pushed several regions in Pakistan to the brink of a severe crisis. Locals in Sindh and other border regions are struggling for basic water needs, and if the situation continues, much of Pakistan could soon face a full-scale drought.
In its letter, Pakistan appealed to India to reconsider the termination of the treaty, citing the growing hardships of people in the affected regions. With this desperate move, all eyes are now on India’s next response to its troubled neighbor’s request.
