Former MLC K. Kavitha emphasized the need to stock epidural in all government hospitals of Telangana. The anaesthetic, she said, would ensure pain-free delivery during childbirth and relieve many pregnant women from facing hardship during the crucial period. She urged Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha to take a policy decision and do the needful.

In every government hospital in Telangana, around 500 child deliveries are performed every month. Of them, around 250 are C-sections while the remaining are normal deliveries. There is every possibility for these deliveries to be painful. In the olden days, pregnant women used to withstand the excruciating pain during childbirth due to the absence of pain-killers and anaesthetics. If Epidural is introduced, women can avoid going through the pain.

Kavitha also apologized for not giving a thought to the policy of mandatory administration of epidural during normal deliveries. It was my mistake to not have thought of administering this medicine in the government hospitals, during the 10 years of BRS rule, she said.

“At that time, I made it a point to visit the government hospital in Nizamabad during my every visit and also ensured that the attenders in the hospital were served free meals but did not think of epidural administration,” she said, sounding to seek a sincere apology.
