After deporting foreign students heavily in the recent past, the Trump administration, students said, is using new tactics and unconvincing narratives to push more students out of the country. Trump seems to be hell bent on throwing out foreigners and protecting the nation only for US citizens.
While some students have been targeted over pro-Palestinian activism, others were charged of violation of law and traffic rules. A few others could not understand where they ran in conflict with the government.
Students, whose entry visas were revoked, are receiving orders from the Department of Homeland Security asking them to leave the country immediately, unlike in the past when they were allowed to stay and complete their studies.
College authorities expressed concern that this approach will keep foreigners away from wanting to study in the US.
In a latest development, five international students of Minnesota State University in Mankato, have been asked to leave the campus after revoking their visas, due to unclear reasons.
The five students came into focus of the officials while they were running a status check in a database of international students, after the detention of a student from Turkey at University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, charged with drunken driving.
It is worth recalling that US President Donald Trump promised to deport foreign students involved in pro-Palestinian students, during the hustings and the federal agents started by detaining Columbia graduate student Mahmoud Khalil, having green card and is a Palestinian activist taking part in protests at Columbia last year.
Many other foreign students at North Carolina State, University of Oregon, Arizona State, University of Texas and University of Colorado were also targeted on various grounds.
It is being said that the federal government is quietly deleting foreigners’ student records, instead of going through colleges, like in the past.
Instead of the earlier practice when international students allowed to keep their legal residency status, though their entry visas revoked, the students are being directed to leave the country without issuing any prior alert.
Now, the legal status of a large number of students is being terminated, putting them at the risk of being arrested.
These measures by the Trump administration should make India rethink about is relations with the US and also advise parents not to encourage US dreams among their children in the near future, till the dust settles and a clear picture evolved.
