It is already known that Bangladesh witnessed violent protest last year against the Sheikh Hasina administration that was in power. This extremist moment led by the student groups created a lot of violence in the country and hundreds of lives were lost.
The then prime minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina fled the country and landed in Delhi, seeking political refuge. She did not travel to Bangladesh after her ouster last year and had been staying in Delhi all the while.
Coming to the topic now, a special court tribunal in Bangladesh has passed the verdict on the Sheikh Hasina case and the result is a fairly shocking one, it could be said.
The court sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death penalty and the verdict was passed a short while ago. This judgement was passed in the absence of Sheikh in Bangladesh who is currently in exile, while staying in India.
Former PM Sheikh Hasina has been convicted of crimes against humanity by a special tribunal. The charges stem from the brutal 36-day student-led protests in July-August 2024 that led to her ouster. A report estimated up to 1,400 people were killed in the crackdown she allegedly created.
She will now have to face the death penalty upon her arrival in Bangladesh and it has to be seen when this would materialize, if at all it happens in the first place.
