Movie promotions today aren’t just about songs and trailers, they’re also about playing the numbers game. Instead of sharing real collections, many film teams now use inflated figures on posters to build hype.

Suriya’s film Retro is the new example for this. While industry sources claim it couldn’t cross ₹100 crore at the box office, the official poster from his own production house boldly declared a ₹235 crore gross. That raised a lot of eyebrows, and triggered discussions on social media.

So, what’s the catch? The massive number includes non-theatrical income like OTT rights and satellite deals, mentioned only in tiny letters at the bottom of the poster. But by shouting out ₹235 crore as if it were pure box office success, the makers have invited trolling rather than praise.

This isn’t a one-off case. We’ve seen this with other films too, where the declared collections barely reflect reality. Fans are now skeptical of any such posters and rightly so.
