A Hindi film titled The Taj Story quietly released and caught the attention of a certain section of the audience. The reason lies in its controversial subject. Recently, a debate erupted claiming that the Taj Mahal was not built by Shah Jahan, and that a Shiva temple once stood at the same site.
While some historians presented evidence to support this claim, others dismissed it as false. Director Tushar Amrish Goyal used this very controversy as the foundation for his film, aiming to turn it into a topic of discussion. However, the result didn’t quite match the expectations.
The story begins in Agra, where a tourist guide named Vishnudas makes a shocking statement in an interview, claiming that a temple existed long before Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal. His words spark a massive controversy that soon escalates into a legal battle.
As the issue reaches the court, Vishnudas’s family faces a series of troubles. His son loses his job, and even their safety is threatened. Determined to prove his claim, Vishnudas decides to file a petition and represent himself in court, setting the stage for an intense courtroom drama.
The film primarily unfolds through these courtroom arguments and discussions. The director focuses on the legal exchanges, blending emotional and intellectual angles to present both sides of the debate.
Paresh Rawal delivers a powerful performance as Vishnudas, completely owning the screen with his emotional intensity. Zakir Hussain, who plays the opposing lawyer, gives an equally strong performance, making their courtroom duels engaging to watch.
However, with a runtime of nearly 2 hours and 45 minutes, the film moves at a slow pace. Despite good dialogues, the prolonged courtroom sequences make it heavy for regular viewers. The Taj Story may interest those keen on historical and controversial subjects, but for the general audience, it tends to feel lengthy and dull.
At the box office, the response has been moderate in multiplexes, but overall, it seems to be heading toward commercial failure.
