As Independence Day 2025 approaches, two major films — War 2 and Coolie — are gearing up for a high-stakes box office clash on August 14. However, what’s drawing even more attention is the reported tussle over IMAX screens.
Industry sources suggest that War 2, produced by Yash Raj Films and starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR, has secured an exclusive deal with IMAX. The agreement is said to cover all 30+ IMAX screens across India and several overseas markets for a three-week window starting August 14, with a possibility of extension based on performance and scheduling. This would make War 2 the only Indian film to play in IMAX during that period.
Adding to this, it’s been confirmed that War 2 is also the only Indian movie cleared by the IMAX Corporation for release till November. The IMAX Corporation, known for its strict technical standards, has released its global list of upcoming IMAX titles, and War 2 is the sole Indian entry. This not only reflects the film’s production scale but also highlights its positioning as a global event release.
On the other hand, Coolie, backed by Sun Pictures and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, also releases on the same date. Featuring Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, and Aamir Khan, the film has been pitched as a full-blown commercial entertainer. But confusion reportedly arose after the IMAX logo appeared on some of its posters. According to insiders, IMAX may have reached out to the Coolie team, clarifying that the film was not certified for IMAX screenings.
While neither studio has issued an official statement, the developments have sparked debate in trade circles. Some insiders view this as a strategic edge for YRF and War 2, while others feel Coolie may have lost a key format that enhances theatrical appeal.
With War 2 seemingly holding the premium screens and the marketing push from IMAX reportedly backing it — the early advantage appears to be tilting in its favour. Meanwhile, the IMAX angle has quietly become a talking point in what was initially seen as a star-studded box office duel.
Both films hit theatres on August 14, 2025. While the final outcome will play out on release day, as of now, the IMAX stage seems firmly set for War 2.
