Actor Vijay Sethupathi’s son, Surya Sethupathi, recently landed in controversy for chewing bubble gum while interacting with fans. Eventually, Vijay Sethupathi apologised to those who were unhappy with his son’s behaviour.

To give context, Surya made his debut as a lead actor with the film Phoenix, which hit the screens on July 4. Several videos surfaced online showing Surya chewing gum during fan interactions at the film’s premiere. A section of social media users called his behaviour “rude” and “arrogant,” attributing it to nepotism in the industry. As a result, Surya received heavy backlash on the internet soon after his debut.

Responding to the criticism, Vijay Sethupathi stated that his son’s actions were unintentional. He said Surya might have done it unknowingly and apologised to everyone who felt hurt by his behaviour. Overall, Surya Sethupathi found himself at the centre of an unnecessary controversy from the very beginning of his acting career.

Directed by popular stunt choreographer Anl Arasu, Phoenix is a boxing drama featuring Surya as a young boxer who takes on a powerful villain. The film also stars Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Devadarshini, Abhinakshatra, and others in key roles.
