The Telugu box office has been unusually dry this week. After the mixed results of Baahubali: The Epic re-release and the disappointing run of Ravi Teja’s Mass Jathara, theatres across the Telugu states are running with low occupancy. Except for a few multiplexes in Hyderabad, footfalls have dropped sharply. Trade analysts say Baahubali: The Epic has already pulled in whatever it could during its opening weekend, while Ravi Teja’s film is already washed away.
Now, all eyes are on this Friday, November 7, when a bunch of new films are lined up for release. The youth seem particularly excited about The Girlfriend, which banks heavily on Rashmika Mandanna’s craze. Promoted as a different kind of love story, the movie could draw good crowds if word-of-mouth clicks.
Sudheer Babu’s Jatadhara is another major release this week. Though the pre-release buzz isn’t too strong, the team appears confident about strong reviews and positive talk post-release. Being a fantasy genre film, trade circles are curious if it might surprise at the box office like Mirai.
Meanwhile, Thiruveer’s The Greatest Pre-Wedding Show is struggling for attention and will rely completely on audience feedback. The Tamil dubbed film Aryan, starring Vishnu Vishal, is also releasing this week, a week later than its Tamil version, which received an average response. Vishnu Vishal has been actively promoting the film in Hyderabad to build some momentum.
Alongside these, small films like Premisthunna and Krishna Leela are also testing their luck, while Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi’s Hawk adds some pan-Indian flavor to the lineup.
With theatres craving fresh content, the coming weekend will decide which films revive the dull box office and which fade out without a trace.
