Despite being a star hero in the Tamil film industry, Suriya has been struggling to score a blockbuster for the last few years. Especially, his last two films, Kanguva and Retro, not only were huge disappointments but were big financial disasters.

He aimed to come back strong with his upcoming film Karuppu, which is a commercial mass-masala flick and a safe bet to score a hit. The film was initially slated for Diwali release, but couldn’t be released on time due to a few reasons. As a result, Suriya missed a golden chance of taking advantage of the festive season.

In a recent interview, Karuppu’s director, RJ Balaji, also admitted that they initially planned for a Diwali release but couldn’t arrive as planned. Instead, they opted to release a song on this festive day.

This Diwali, there were no star-studded releases in Tamil. Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dude, Dhruv Vikram’s Bison, and Harish Kalyan’s Diesel were the only films in the race. None of them is targeted at the B and C center audiences. Tamil Nadu box office truly missed a mass film’s release this Diwali. Even in Telugu, there were no big releases during this Diwali. So, if Suriya had arrived with Karuppu, he would have definitely gotten big openings in both Tamil and Telugu.

Even last year, Suriya planned to arrive with Kanguva during Diwali. For some reason, it was pushed and was released on November 14. However, the film ended up as a disaster. Many people opined that if it had been released during Diwali, the movie would have at least collected good openings during the festive season.

On the whole, Suriya missed two Diwali releases on the trot. While Kanguva’s release cost him badly, it remains to be seen how Karuppu’s delay would impact its fate at the box office.
