Indian audiences are quite inclined towards thrillers, and this trend has picked up after the advent of OTT platforms. Even now, many audiences prefer watching thrillers to any other genre. Maybe this is the reason why thrillers are getting more positive reception than star hero films in recent times, especially in the Tamil film industry.
Vijay Anthony’s new film Maargan is a good example of this trend. The film was released last week with no buzz around it. However, the collections picked up from the evening shows of the release day, and the movie ended up getting decent collections by the end of the first weekend, in both Tamil and Telugu. The thrilling narrative and crisp runtime helped the movie get a positive response from the audience.
The same is the case with Naveen Chandra’s Eleven. Though the movie didn’t do well in theatres, it is being received extremely well after its OTT release. Many people called it one of the finest thrillers in recent times. They opined that better promotions from the makers would have helped the movie in getting good theatrical collections.
In the Tamil film industry, these thrillers are getting a more positive response than the star films. Apart from Maargan and Eleven, Ten Hours and DNA received a good reception in Tamil Nadu. While they outrightly rejected big films like Retro, Thug Life and Vidaamuyarchi, they encouraged small thrillers like Maargan, Eleven, DNA and Ten Hours. All these movies are made on a low budget and mostly based on real incidents.
Reportedly, around 20 thrillers are currently in the making stage in Kollywood right now. That proves the trend in the industry right now. So, it has to be seen how long this trend of thrillers will manage to engage the audience.
