A new collaboration between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan has been officially announced. The two legends of Tamil cinema are teaming up again, but not as co-actors. Kamal Haasan will produce a film starring Rajinikanth, directed by Sundar C.
Tentatively titled #Thalaivar173, the project was announced on November 5, 2025. The film will be produced under Raaj Kamal Films International, headed by Kamal Haasan, along with R. Mahendran, and released through Red Giant Movies. This film reunites Rajinikanth and director Sundar C after 28 years, following their earlier collaboration on Arunachalam (1997).
The announcement poster read, “Kamal Haasan presents Superstar Rajinikanth in a film by Sundar C,” confirming the reunion of two major names in Tamil cinema. The project also marks the 44th anniversary of Raaj Kamal Films International.
The film is announced to have a theatrical release during Pongal 2027. The announcement also emphasized the long-standing friendship between Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, who began their careers around the same time and have maintained mutual respect through the years.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that both actors may also appear together in another multistarrer soon. While that project has been confirmed by both stars, the director is yet to be finalized. Several leading filmmakers are reportedly in talks.
Kamal Haasan also shared a brief message in Tamil, expressing his admiration and emotional bond with Rajinikanth, recalling their journey in cinema over the decades. Rajinikanth is expected to begin work on this film after completing Jailer 2, directed by Nelson.
