Netflix has been in India for several years, mainly focusing on Hindi content. Unlike other platforms like Amazon Prime and Zee5, it hasn’t done many original films or series in South Indian languages. Recently, Netflix has seen growing popularity in the South by streaming Telugu and Tamil films after their theatrical release.

In 2024, Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja became Netflix’s most-watched Indian film worldwide. Dulquer Salmaan’s Lucky Baskhar stayed in India’s Top 10 for 14 weeks. Films like Pushpa 2, Amaran, Leo, and Devara also reached the Global Top 10 Non-English lists, showing the rising demand for stories from south. Netflix is now launching six new Tamil and Telugu original films and series.

Monika Shergill, Vice President of Content at Netflix India, said, “We are excited to bring new stories from Telugu and Tamil cinema. The lineup includes thrillers, comedies, dramas and romances.
