Vishwaksen is known for his bold approach toward cinema, but he does not always get his conviction right. He is currently busy with the promotions of the movie Laila, where he also sports a lady getup for a significant portion of the movie. The film’s trailer is out and it is one of the worst trailers we have ever seen in Telugu cinema.
Not just the way it was cut, but the way it depicted a woman is highly objectionable. The trailer showcases the plot that Vishwaksen is wanted by the local MLA and other goons, and in order to escape from them, he resorts to disguising himself as a woman and moves around with the same people for who he is most wanted.
Although the plot line is impressive on paper, one must translate it to the screen without getting on to the vulgar route. The trailer is filled with double-meaning lines. Gone are those days where the filmmakers could easily get away by objectifying women.
The trailer of Laila is filled with the same. Vishwaksen played the lady getup but it is restricted to a mere skin show and it does not help the narrative at all, at least with the way how it was projected in the trailer. Vishwaksen enjoys a decent following in youth, especially among young girls and women. But, they would feel disgusted watching the film’s trailer because it not only objectifies women but also glorifies vulgarity.
Decades ago, actors like Rajendra Prasad also did films, by wearing lady getup. Titled Madam, the film carried a beautiful message and many filmmakers later tried to replicate it but failed. When attempting something like this, the filmmakers should not cross the line, especially in the current times.
With this trailer, the makers of Laila garnered mixed reactions and needs to see how this movie will perform in the theatres.
