Sekhar Kammula’s bilingual social thriller Kuberaa, which marks his direct entry into Tamil cinema, has opened to a surprisingly lukewarm advance booking response in Tamil Nadu. While the collaboration between Kammula and Dhanush generated early interest, the pre-release numbers haven’t quite matched the buzz, especially in key urban centres where Dhanush traditionally enjoys a solid pull.

Arriving after the successful release of Raayan, which also had Dhanush behind the camera, Kuberaa has recorded one of the weakest advance bookings for the actor in the state in over a decade. This is particularly surprising given the film’s mainstream appeal and the presence of a socially relevant theme — elements that often align with Dhanush’s established audience.

Even Dhanush’s more offbeat ventures like Captain Miller saw stronger initial traction. The contrast here points to a disconnect between anticipation and ticket sales, suggesting that the pre-release campaign may not have fully landed with the Tamil audience.

On the other hand, Kuberaa seems to be faring slightly better in the Telugu states, thanks to Sekhar Kammula’s standing in the region and the presence of Nagarjuna. However, it’s the Tamil Nadu performance that will ultimately steer the film’s box office run.

With early shows set to roll out in a day, the film’s immediate fate will rest heavily on word-of-mouth and critical feedback. A positive response could still turn things around over the weekend. For now, though, Kuberaa walks a tightrope — entering theatres with muted expectations and carrying the rare burden of low opening numbers for a Dhanush starrer.
