Dhanush’s self-directed film Idli Kottu performed moderately well in Tamil but turned out to be a disaster in Telugu. The makers expected that its emotional storytelling would connect with Telugu audiences, but that prediction went wrong. Some believe that the movie could have performed better if it hadn’t clashed with Dude, its main competition at the box office.

Recently, the film completed its four week theatrical run and premiered on Netflix. Within a week of its OTT release, Idli Kottu crossed five million views, while OG, which was released on the same platform, took eleven days to reach that mark.

The surprising part is that a simple village based film without much action or commercial elements has received such a huge response online. Many viewers who missed it in theatres chose to watch it with their families at home, which helped boost its streaming numbers.

This OTT success is a big boost for Dhanush’s market value. It will help fetch better digital deals for his upcoming projects, as the film managed to dominate even big titles on streaming platforms.

Though the film’s heavy emotional tone might not have clicked with Telugu audiences in theatres, its digital response proves one thing clearly, a strong star presence can pull viewers on OTT no matter how simple the content is. Dhanush is reportedly thrilled with the response, and his fans have every reason to celebrate.
