Malayalam filmmaker Jeethu Joseph is acclaimed for crafting one of the finest thriller movie franchises, Mohanlal’s Drishyam. The maverick director is currently helming the third installment of the Drishyam franchise.
Speaking at the Manorama News Conclave, Jeethu Joseph said that he is “tired” of the same pattern in delivering twists and thrills in the Drishyam franchise and promised a fresh and different approach in Drishyam 3. “It will be clear to viewers that I didn’t do it for the money,” he added.
Jeethu revealed that his intention is to approach the third part with a totally new perspective, highlighting that the thrills in the third installment will unfold “naturally” for Georgekutty’s family. “Audiences will understand the difference when they see the film,” Jeethu said.
Jeethu went on to explain that his decision to move away from conventional thrillers is rooted in a growing sense of creative fatigue. “I’m bored of doing films in the same pattern,” he admitted. Jeethu also expressed his plans to explore new cinematic ventures beyond the confines of twists and logic, which are regular tropes in thrillers.
“In Telugu cinema, they ask for a climactic twist. In Tamil, they demand logic. It’s become too much,” Jeethu added, acknowledging the pressure of consistently delivering formulaic thrills. Interestingly, Jeethu also hinted at the possibility of a fourth Drishyam film, adding that he has yet to come up with a clear vision for it.
Jeethu revealed that the climactic moments of both Drishyam 2 and Drishyam 3 came to his mind first. Recalling a conversation with Mohanlal after a screening of Drishyam 2, where he shared his ideas for the climax of the third Drishyam film, Jeethu said, “Lalettan loved it.”
