In the post-COVID era, the theatre-going culture has slowly declined in North India. Firstly, there are no promising films that are being made in Hindi which demand theatrical viewing. Secondly, the rise of OTT platforms has also affected the theatrical business heavily in North Indian states.
This year, there were no big blockbusters in Hindi, apart from the likes of Chhaava, Stree 2 and Saiyaara. Many major releases like War 2, Sikandar, Sitaare Zameen Par and Raid 2 have failed to live up to the hype. Now, all eyes are on Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s “Thamma”, which is slated for release on October 21. It remains to be seen if this horror thriller manages to recreate the magic of Maddock Film’s other major horror hit, Stree 2.
Diwali is a huge business season for Bollywood, and Thamma is arriving in theatres this festive period with no major competition. This will be a big advantage for the film. On top of it, Thamma is a part of Maddock’s Horror Cinematic Universe, which includes the likes of Stree, Munjya, Bhediya and Stree 2. Given the success of all these films, there are high expectations for Thamma too.
If Thamma generates a positive word of mouth, there would be no stopping for the film at the box office, and if things fall in place, it might even cross the collections of Stree 2.
