The much-awaited biopic on cricketing icon Sourav Ganguly is finally rolling, and it’s now official, powerhouse performer Rajkummar Rao will bring the ‘Prince of Kolkata’ to life on the big screen.
Putting months of speculation to rest, Rajkummar Rao confirmed the news in a recent interview, saying, “Now that Dada has announced it, I can say it too — yes, I’m playing him in the biopic.”
Known for his intense, transformative performances, Rajkummar admitted the role comes with “huge responsibility” but expressed excitement for the challenge. “I am nervous, but it’s going to be a lot of fun,” he added.
Interestingly, Rajkumar has a personal advantage when it comes to portraying Ganguly, his wife, actress Patralekhaa, is Bengali. The actor revealed he has been learning the language and is confident about getting the Bengali accent right on screen.
Meanwhile, Ganguly himself couldn’t be happier with the casting. The former Team India captain said, “I think the right person is doing it. I’ll help him with everything.” He also revealed that the film will go on floors in January 2026, with a grand theatrical release planned for December 2026.
The yet-to-be-titled biopic will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane and produced by Luv Films. The film promises to chronicle Ganguly’s incredible journey , from the narrow streets of Kolkata to the grand stage of international cricket, where he scored over 18,500 runs and led India to several historic victories.
This marks yet another real-life character for Rajkummar Rao, who has previously impressed with roles like Shahid Azmi in Shahid, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh in Omerta, and Srikanth Bolla in Srikanth..
