Akhanda 2: Thaandavam, the sequel to Akhanda, is set to release in the first week of December, the same slot where the first film turned into a blockbuster. Since then, the early December window has become a hot pick for producers. Films like Animal, Hi Nanna and Pushpa 2 also enjoyed strong theatrical runs during this period. Akhanda 2 locked its release for December 5, announced well in advance.
On the other hand, the team behind Biker surprised everyone by dropping a glimpse of the film and revealing its release date as December 6, just a day after Akhanda 2. With only a month to go, this sudden announcement caught many off guard.
Biker is a motor sports drama, it stars Sharwanand and Malvika Nair, with veteran actor Rajasekhar in a key role. The glimpse launch event took place on Saturday in the presence of the film’s team.
In today’s box office climate, clashes are usually avoided unless it’s a festival weekend or there’s room for multiple big releases. Traditionally, Sankranthi was the preferred window for major films, while November and December were left for small and mid-range movies. But trends are shifting, and now every week has competition for solo release slots.
With Akhanda 2 and Biker releasing back-to-back, the risk seems higher for Biker. Balakrishna’s collaboration with Boyapati Sreenu already has a strong following, and this sequel marks their fourth outing together. Sharwanand, coming off a rough patch, faces a major challenge releasing against such a massive film.
The real reason behind this clash seems tied to OTT scheduling. Streaming platforms have become selective with their acquisitions, limiting the number of films they buy from each language every year. They also track which titles are headed to rival platforms. If one major film is sold to a particular OTT service, another platform often pushes a competing film to release around the same time, both in theatres and later on OTT.
These competitive strategies and strict schedules leave filmmakers with little choice but to follow OTT timelines, even if it leads to box office clashes. With OTT deals dictating release dates, skipping them isn’t an option anymore. That leaves Biker with no choice but to arrive on December 6, one day after Akhanda 2.
