Bollywood perfectionist Aamir Khan decided to release his last film, Sitaare Zameen Par, on YouTube after its theatrical run ended. Typically, movies are sold to OTT platforms. Still, Aamir did not want to follow this traditional route and opted for a pay-per-view model on YouTube. In a recent interview, Aamir opened up on how far this trend has been booming.
Sitaare Zameen Par is available for viewing on YouTube for 100 rupees. If any user begins watching the film, it will be available for 48 hours. If the time limit expires, the user must pay again. Even if the user finishes watching it in 48 hours and wants to watch it again, the user has to pay the money once again.
Speaking about the status of the pay-per-view model, Aamir Khan said, “In general, the pay-per-view model is picking up slowly. We can not expect an aggressive flow of money. Usually, if a film makes x amount in this model, we are doing 20x, which is a good thing. But, if we compare it with the traditional way of making money via OTT platforms, we stand far from making big revenues,” said Aamir Khan.
It is clear that the pay-per-view model is generating revenue, but it is not as fast as how OTT platforms hand over the money. Usually, movies are being sold for an X amount depending on the star value and the content of the project. But in the pay-per-view model, that big money at once is unexpected. It is a slow process that works in the long run. Aamir is also aware of the same.
But, the word in the town is that Aamir Khan wanted to have a space for himself without surrendering to the pressure-like situations that the OTT platforms usually create. Aamir sold his films to big OTT platforms in the past, but it will kill his freedom from the moment he gives away the rights. In fact, Aamir wants to create a steady income in the long run, which is an excellent idea. However, it is too early to arrive at a conclusion in this aspect.
On the work front, Aamir was last seen in Coolie and will next work with Lokesh Kanagaraj.
