It’s not backed by a star hero. The director isn’t famous. The lead actor is barely 25. There are no popular faces, no flashy cast, and only about 60 people on screen. Yet, Tourist Family, a small Tamil film, is creating serious buzz and beating bigger films at the box office.
Released alongside Hit 3 and Suriya’s Retro last Friday, this small bu movie has quietly taken the lead in ticket sales. According to BookMyShow, on Monday alone, Tourist Family sold 66,000 tickets—more than Hit 3 (59K) and Retro (35K). And remember, it only released in Tamil!
When some producers blame poor collections on cricket, summer heat, or bad reviews, Tourist Family shows that a well-made movie will find its crowd—even without the hype.
Buzz is that Telugu producers are now competing to buy dubbing or remake rights. Some feel dubbing is a better choice since the original’s emotion, especially its Sri Lankan refugee family background, may be hard to recreate authentically.
